DOLLARS AND SENSE - Recent investigations highlight a troubling nationwide trend: SNAP benefits, a lifeline for many families, are being siphoned off through EBT fraud.Across the country, hundreds of thousands of police reports have been filed about stolen SNAP benefits, revealing the alarming scope of the problem. “The last report I have is from May. There have been over 250,000 police reports filed across the country from food insecure individuals who have had their EBT cards stolen,” said Haywood Talcove, CEO of LexisNexis Risk Solutions’ Government Group. “The probability of getting caught is almost zero.”International and domestic criminals are employing tactics like card skimmers and phishing scams to exploit the current system's vulnerabilities. Victims, like the mother of 8 in this CBS story, should never have to face having their benefits stolen once, let alone over and over again. This isn't just about numbers; it's about American families potentially going hungry due to the lack of robust program integrity. It's essential to prioritize and implement common-sense fraud controls nationally. Every dollar lost isn't just a number; it's a meal taken away from someone in need. Flagler School District Loses ‘Significant Amount of Money’ in Apparent Phishing Scheme Involving Vendor: FlagerLive reports: The Flagler County school district was the target of electronic fraud involving what Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly described as a “pretty significant amount of money,” in a scheme having all the makings of phishing–a common method by fraudsters of impersonating familiar contacts either to induce a swindle or to make the recipient reveal sensitive financial information. […] FlaglerLive has learned, but has not confirmed, that the sum involved is around $700,000, and that the money was intended as payment to a contractor or a vendor involved in the ongoing expansion at Matanzas High School, a $22.6 million projecton which it broke ground in late July.
