I saw "The Sign" (on BLUEY)...and it opened up my eyesI saw "The Sign!"You guessed it, I loved it! On the writing side, here are a few moments that really stood out to me:1. The Front Seat / S&P When Bluey and the kids get in the car with Chili, there's a moment when Bluey gets to sit in the front. I loved the way this was handled, because there was probably someone on the standards and practices team that raised concern about whether she would even be allowed in the front seat. Rather than just ticking off the box, this bit became interwoven within the course of the episode. The police officer that stopped Chili also needed clarification on the rule, which leads to the group finding Frisky. This is a great tip to any writer that deals with S&P notes -- find a way to turn them into something fun and meaningful for the episode! 2. Bingo / Delayed reactionThe first heartbreaking moment came for me while watching Bingo process the information that the Heelers were moving away. For most of the episode, she's completely fine with it. She hears the news, then goes off to play like nothing's wrong. It's only when the movers begin taking furniture out of the house that the gravity of what's about to happen truly sets in. This was such a smart, specific detail that captures the experience of younger children. They process life in the present. Seeing Bingo understand what was going to happen was both beautiful and shattering at the same time. 3. The Lookout / Chili's ArcI love how so much of this episode is about Chili, and the way she's processing this big change for her home and family. While Bandit bookends the episode, Chili feels like the anchor for this story. How do you tell a child that everything's going to be okay when you are also still processing the future and fearful of what's to come? Chili's breakdown at the lookout, when she finally lets herself be vulnerable and honest about what's happening, is one of the best character moments for this Heeler parent that often has to maintain a semblance of control for her families' benefit. 4. The Sign / Bandit's sacrificeI mean... that ending hit everyone, right? Bandit ripping out the sign/Chili tackling him to the ground, sobbing. The beautiful song and score as the camera pans up. I love thinking about Bandit's decision from the perspective of someone like Joe Brumm, someone that's worked in animation production for a long time. Imagine getting THE job on a life-changing new show. Work you love doing, that will give you the money and benefits you've always wanted to provide your family. Now imagine truly giving that up, setting aside your hopes and dreams, because your family will actually have a better life without it. Placing this episode in the context of a real person that's experienced that choice makes what Bandit's doing all the more powerful. So yeah... more please?!! #kidstv, #writing, #bluey, #disney, #aceofbaseanyone?
