What is the difference between Sense Ride 4 and 5? ›

I prefer V4. Jeff V: Compared throughout, V5 has more cushion, better traction, better foothold and better protection and is even a bit lighter, but those with wider feet or prefer more room might have trouble with the toe box being a bit more performance fit than the V4.

Because of the softer rubber, wearing trail-running shoes on the road, where they will regularly pound and rub on hard pavement, can wear the soles out more quickly than if you stick to the softer surface of a trail.

The outsole of the Sense Ride does not contain a rock plate, which is part of what allows the shoe's base to be so flexible and responsive. The 28mm stack offers good underfoot protection without going overboard and inhibiting trail feel.

The fit of the Salomon Sense Ride 5 is relatively anatomical. The heel is normal to slightly narrow width. The midfoot is normal width, while the forefoot is slightly wide with a gradual taper into the toe box. The length of the shoe is true to size, though a tiny bit long.

Both trail and hiking shoes have the potential to be equally comfortable over long days of walking. For shorter walks, carrying lighter loads and where speed is important, trail running shoes offer a balance of cushion and flex.

If the soil is soft, frequently muddy, or full of rocks and roots, wearing trail running shoes is worthwhile because they offer better traction and may even prevent a fall.

Similiarly, trail shoes will have no problem performing on the road. The only issue you may run into is the factor of “softness”. Road/asphalt/cement is substantially less forgiving than dirt or grass so you may need a little more cushion than you would on the trails.

It depends on the trails and the runner, but you generally want to see thicker and softer outsole rubber than you find on a road shoe. The midsole may be made of a similar material, but it should include a rock plate (a plastic plate embedded in the foam) if your trails include sharp rocks and stones.
