  • Thomas S. Mulligan, 73, a prize-winning journalist who broke stories from the trading floors of Wall Street to the war zones of Iraq, died Monday of complications from cancer. He lived in Providence with his wife of more than 45 years, fellow journalist Irene M. Wielawski. A Boston native raised in Scituate and Milton, MA, Tom began his career in the State House bureau of the Associated Press, became the Providence Journal’s financial editor within a decade, and served for more than 20 years as an editor and reporter at the Los Angeles Times. Among many honors, he shared in the Pulitzer Prizes awarded to the Times for coverage of the Los Angeles riots of 1992 and the Northridge earthquake of 1994. Along the way, he built an army of devoted friends and colleagues who knew him variously as a master storyteller, tenacious athlete, passionate music fan, and family man without peer. One of eight brothers and sisters, Tom was a son of John E. Mulligan Jr. and Frances M. Hennessey, and a stepson of Mary O’Gorman Mulligan, all deceased. He went to Milton High School, Milton, MA, graduated from Bowdoin College in 1973, and later earned two masters degrees. After his start at the AP and the Middlesex News in Massachusetts, Tom joined the Providence Journal in Rhode Island, where he met Irene, whom he married in 1978. Their children, Emily and Andrew, were born and started school in Providence, as he moved through the newspaper’s ranks. In 1989, Tom joined the Los Angeles Times as...
