L-1 Identity Solutions brokers $2.5 million deal with U.S. Military for its PIER™ products - SecureIDNews (2024)

L-1 Identity Solutions has received two orders from the U.S. Military for its PIER portable iris recognition and enrollment devices totaling over $2.5 million. The PIER devices will be used in conjunction with the Military’s Biometrics Automated Toolset (BAT) system to identify and track persons of interest using multi-modal biometrics. The PIER 2.3 and PIER-T will be used by the U.S. Army and the PIER 2.3 and 2.4 will be used by the U.S. Marine Corps. The PIER is a handheld device that enrolls and identifies using iris recognition and can hold up to 200,000 individuals (both eyes). Using the L-1 matching engine, SIRIS™, identities can be confirmed in less than one second. PIER devices are already being used in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and other areas of conflict.

L-1 Identity Solutions Receives Orders Valued at More than $2.5 Million for PIER™ Handheld Iris Recognition Devices from the U.S. Military

STAMFORD, Conn. — L-1 Identity Solutions, Inc. today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary SecuriMetrics, Inc. has received two orders from the U.S. Military for the family of PIER portable iris recognition and enrollment devices. The orders have an aggregate value to L-1 of more than $2.5 million. The PIER devices will be used in connection with the Military’s Biometrics Automated Toolset (BAT) System, used for positive identification, tracking and visualization of persons of interest and associated information using multi-modal biometrics in a scalable architecture environment. Since its initial deployment, the use of the BAT has been expanded for various other identification scenarios.

One order is from the U.S. Army for PIER 2.3 and PIER-T devices. The second order was placed by the U.S. Navy Spawar Systems Center for PIER 2.3 and 2.4 devices to be fielded by the U.S. Marine Corps.

“Iris recognition continues to gain momentum as a non-invasive and fast means of identifying people of interest in the field,” said Bruce Hanson, President of L-1’s wholly owned subsidiaries SecuriMetrics, Inc. and Iridian Technologies, Inc. “The human iris contains massive amounts of detailed information unique to each individual, and because it is completely formed at 18 months of age and remains unchanged throughout one’s lifetime, it is one of the most stable and accurate biometric modalities available. The U.S. Military’s continued use of iris-based recognition devices is evidence of its superior performance in the field where fast and precise identification of subjects can often be the difference between life and death.”

The PIER is a rugged hand-held device that allows the operator to enroll and identify individuals using the highly unique patterns and textures of the human iris. The PIER can store a database of up to 200,000 individuals (both left and right eye) and quickly return the identity of the subject with extremely high accuracy. When connected to an L-1 SIRIS™ matching engine, the PIER family of devices can be used to confirm an individual’s identity against a database of one billion records in less than one second. PIER 2.3 and 2.4 have the same functionality, but the 2.4 contains twice the on-board memory to enable a much larger iris database of subjects to be carried when the device is used in an untethered mode. PIER-T is designed to operate while tethered to a host PC or laptop. Thousands of PIER devices are in deployment throughout Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and other areas of conflict.
