Which boots are most comfortable for walking? ›

Martens boots are not only stylish, they're also incredibly comfortable. In fact, we're surprised at how comfortable they are straight out of the box—which isn't always the case for leather boots. They fit true to size and have a roomy toe box with enough space for a thick sock on colder days.

The upper: Usually made with synthetic fabric, these usually stay lightweight and more breathable than hiking boots and are therefore considered the more comfortable option. On the other hand, walking shoes don't offer the same level of weather protection and tend not to perform in rainy conditions.

Your boot or shoe should feel comfortably snug and supportive, but not tight. Be sure there's enough room in the toe box for you to wiggle your toes, but not so much that your foot slides or shifts around. Adjust the lacing to get just the right snugness—numb or tingly feet can mean your laces are too tight.

Your feet also change size and shape depending on the time of day and the seasons, so it's worth looking for a pair of walking shoes or hiking boots that are a half size larger to give yourself some extra room. You can always use thicker socks or a larger insole to fill up space.

Hiking shoes can be quite versatile. While they are primarily designed for hiking, they can also be used for other outdoor activities like walking, trekking, or light trail running.

In fact, when it comes to hiking shoes, you should order up a half-size.

Lighter hiking boots are good to go right out of the box. Heavy hiking boots, on the other hand, may need some break-in time before a long hiking trip. Wearing them on a few shorter day hikes first could mean the difference between tending blisters and relaxing by the fire with a warm drink.

While the boots are laced, stand up, and wiggle your toes. If your big toe is close to the front, but not touching, you should be fine. However, if your toe is at, or more than a thumbs distance away from the toe box, the boot is too big.

Be sure there is 'wiggle room'. There should be about an inch between your toes and the tip of your shoes.

Instead, most hikers will probably find it necessary to spend $100 to $200 on a good pair of boots. You can definitely get a very high-quality pair of boots in that price range, and – as you've no doubt noticed by now – you can get a pretty darn good pair for less than $100.

There is no right answer to how long walking boots should last, as this will depend on factors such as type of material and frequency of use, but is suggested that they can last between 500 and 1200 miles. If you walk an average of 10 miles per week, your boots should last from one to two years.

Stand upright and have them check how much room you have behind your heel. In a properly fitting boot, they should be able to get roughly one finger between your heel and the back of the boot. If they get significantly more or less than that, the boot is too large or small.

Road-running shoes: Made for pavement, these lightweight shoes are good for walking at a brisk pace. They're also good if you want one pair of shoes for walking and running. Hiking shoes: These are a good option for paths in urban parks or greenbelts and surfaces like cobblestone streets and gravel paths.

As a general rule, if you're doing more casual, lightweight walking, then a pair of walking shoes should do the trick. However, if you're doing more intensive, longer-distance walking over challenging terrain, then walking boots are certainly the choice we would recommend – especially for the colder months.
